Attorneys for James Holmes are expected to present an insanity defense this week in the trail of the 2012 Aurora movie theater shooting.

NBC News noted that Holmes’ public defender Dan King said that the defense would be ready to present its case on June 25. He will try and convince jurors that his client suffered from a mental illness which played a role in his state of mind the night of the shooting. The defense may also refer to a notebook that the prosecution presented in its case.

As previously reported, in a brown 29-page notebook Holmes wrote his “broken mind” and an “obsession to kill.” The defense could use it to try and prove how deep the 27-year-old feel into his illness.

Holmes is standing trial for opening fire in a crowded movie theater on July 20, 2012, during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises. A dozen people were killed and 70 people were injured and he was arrested outside the theater a few minutes later.

The massacre was the worst in Colorado’s history since the Columbine High School shootings in 1999.
