A man in China is suing a popular actress because he said she stared at him too intensely through the television screen and caused him “damage.”
Yes, the lawsuit is real and it’s not the only outrageous one that has been filed in the country recently. As the Associated Press reported, a law passed on May 1 in China now makes it harder for courts to turn down lawsuits and some frivolous claims are being filed.
"Previously, it was difficult for administrative cases, such as people suing governments, to be accepted," said Li Heping, a Beijing lawyer.
In the latest suit, the complainant has alleged that one of China’s most famous actresses, Zhao Wei’s stare led to “spiritual damage.” He claims that she did so by staring at him with an evil eye.
Wei stars in the prime-time series Tiger Mom. She plays a woman who pushes her daughter hard academically while her husband has a more nonchalant approach. Sky News noted that Wei’s character is described as a "strong-willed disciplinarian mother."
Gan Wen, deputy head of the case-filing chamber under the Supreme Court, said that this case is yet another example of a waste of judicial resources.
