A massive sinkhole opened up on a Colorado highway Friday morning and sent an officer and his patrol car down 15 feet.

The Denver Post reported that the sinkhole opened up and swallowed Sheridan police Sergeant Greg Miller’s SUV as he was nearing an intersection around 2:15 a.m. local time.

"Next thing I know ... dirt - I'm assuming dust from the airbag - was floating around," Miller said as he detailed the incident to KUSA. "I hear the rushing water, and all I see is a dirt wall in front of me."

He then became trapped because the door jammed.

"The door wouldn't open, so I had to crawl through the window," he said. "I reached up, grabbed the rails at the top of the roof, pulled myself up, got on top of the car, and that's when I reached up and pulled myself up out of the hole."

Miller escaped with only minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital.

Crews were called in to start working on repairing the roadway and getting the police vehicle out of the hole. An exposed gas line was discovered, which will have to be shut off before the SUV can be retrieved.
