The New England Patriots reportedly cut tight end Tim Wright on Thursday.
Sources have told FOX Sports that the 25-year-old, who went to the Pats last year in a trade with Tampa Bay for guard Logan Mankins, has been released.
Wright caught 26 passes and had six touchdowns for the Patriots last season, however, he did not have any catches in the team’s playoff run. He had 54 receptions with the Buccaneers the year before for five touchdowns, Pro-Football-Reference.com noted.
The Pats are still deep with tight end Rob Gronkowski and Michael Hoomanawanui on the roster. The team also signed former Buffalo Bills tight end Scott Chandler and former Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis as free agents.
Chandler, 29, caught 47 receptions for three touchdowns last year and Davis, also 29, last played in 2013 and had seven receptions for one TD. He did show some production in previous years though.
Wright, meanwhile is young and can be productive for a team in need of a tight end so he should be able to find a new home soon.
