A Virginia man had a colonoscopy done and intended to record the doctor’s instructions for post-operative care, however, he forgot to hit stop and ended up recording the surgical team insulting him.
The Washington Post reported that the patient, only identified as “D.B.” in court documents, had the procedure done in April of 2013. On his way home he pressed play on his smartphone and was surprised to learn that he recorded the entire operation and even more shocked of how the doctors joked and took jabs at him while he was unconscious.
"After five minutes of talking to you in pre-op, I wanted to punch you in the face and man you up a little bit," anesthesiologist Tiffany M. Ingham said of D.B. while was sedated.
As the operation went on the doctors continued to mock the patient. Calling him a “retard” and questioning his sexuality. They were also heard making fun of a rash near his genitals.
“As long as it’s not Ebola, you’re okay,” said gastroenterologist Soloman Shah.
The patient sued for defamation and medical malpractice and last week was awarded $500,000.
CBS News noted that Dr. J.P. Abenstein, President of the American Society of Anesthesiologists said Ingram’s behavior was “disappointing."
"We're taught very early on in medical school to treat all of our patients in a respectful, dignified manner."
