Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out might have been the first film from the studio not to open at No. 1 at the box office, but amazingly, it broke a box office record held by James Cameron’s Avatar. The film, directed by Up’s Pete Docter, now owns the best opening for a film based on an original screenplay.

Over the weekend, Inside Out debuted with $91 million. That easily beats Avatar’s $77 million opening in December 2009. Granted Jurassic World likely has a better shot at besting Avatar’s $2.7 billion total than Inside Out, but it’s still an amazing mark for the Pixar comedy.

Box Office Mojo does note that Inside Out did have a wider opening than Avatar did. Inside Out was screened at 3,946 locations, while Avatar launched at 3,452.

Inside Out grossed $41 million overseas, which sure doesn’t sound like a lot. However, the film only opened in a few markets and has yet to reach China or Japan.

World made $102 million in its second weekend, bringing its estimated domestic total to $398.2 million. Add in the foreign box office and the movie is already up to $981.3 million. It should easily be able to hit $1 billion, breaking Furious 7’s record of 17 days to $1 billion, which was only set in April. (Both World and Furious 7 are Universal movies.)
