Three years after one bloody Christmas, Quentin Tarantino is coming back to give us another one. The Hateful Eight has officially scored a Christmas Day release.
The Weinstein Company confirmed today that the film will hit theaters on Dec. 25 for a limited release, then will go wide on Jan. 8. The limited release will be in 70mm and will be the widest release in that film format in over two decades, according to Variety.
“Beloved by filmmakers and cinephiles for its wide-scope and high-resolution image quality, 70mm stock captures nearly twice the landscape of the more common 35mm and digital styles,” TWC said in a statement. “Because of its unique quality and its importance to the art of filmmaking, Quentin, TWC and a number of other major Hollywood directors and studios have negotiated deals with Kodak to continue production of 70mm and other film formats despite their higher costs and complexity of use.”
The news comes just a few days after a test screening of scenes from the film at Cine Gear Expo on the Paramount lot. After the screening, it was rumored that Tarantino would make sure that 50 theaters across the country will be fitted with film projectors to show Hateful Eight on 70mm.
The Hateful Eight is a Western, like 2012’s Django Unchained, but on a smaller scale. Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Bruce Dern are among the cast of unique Western characters who get stuck in Wyoming during a snowstorm.
Django was also released on Christmas Day and grossed $425 million worldwide. Tarantino won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for the film.
Warner Bros.’ Point Break remake, Sony’s Concussion with Will Smith, Fox’s Joy with Jennifer Lawrence and Oliver Stone’s Snowden also hit theaters on Christmas Day this year.
