Ted 2, Seth MacFarlane’s sequel to the surprising hit 2012 film with a foul-mouthed teddy bear, hits theaters this weekend and has already started off strong. However, the film isn’t likely to win the box office this weekend, since Jurassic World and Inside Out are still doing well.
The new film, which stars Mark Wahlberg and Amanda Seyfried, along with the titular bear voiced by MacFarlane, grossed $2.6 million from Thursday night shows. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, that’s about the same as the first Ted film.
In 2012, Ted scored $54 million on its opening weekend. While Ted 2 isn’t expected to pass that, it could get close with around $50 million. Still, that might not be enough to put an end to Jurassic World’s winning streak. Pixar’s Inside Out could also have a strong weekend after debuting to $91 million last weekend.
The only other wide release hitting theaters this weekend is the Warner Bros./MGM family movie Max, about a kid bonding with a dog returning from Afghanistan. According to Deadline, the film grossed $500,000 last night. It’s expected to make around $10 million over the weekend.
