Sofia Coppola will no longer be directing Universal's The Little Mermaid. She has left the project because of creative differences.
The Hollywood Reporter added that the project had a working script, which was written by Caroline Thompson. This was going to be a live-action adaptation of the classic story which focuses on a young girl who is willing to give up her life under the sea once she falls in love with a prince and the world above the ocean.
It has been reported that casting for the film was already underway and that despite Coppola leaving the project, the studio is wanting to move forward and keep the project on track.
Sofia is not working another project at the moment, she just wrapped up working on a Netflix Christmas special that will star Bill Murray. She directed the special which was written by herself, Murray and Mitch Glazer, Variety reported.
