If you thought the trailers for Terminator Genisys gave away far too much about the film, you're not alone: the director feels the same way.
Back in April, we reported on the Terminator Genisys trailer, which appeared to reveal a pretty massive spoiler. The director is now talking about the marketing for the first time, saying he wishes it hadn't shown so much.
In an interview with Uproxx, director Alan Taylor said he intended for the reveal that John Connor is a terminator to be a surprise, but in the trailer that's clearly shown. It's even made clear on the posters.
So why'd they do it? Taylor said the marketing department wanted to make clear this film was totally distinct from the others and wasn't a simple remake, so they figured they needed to show audiences something brand new. That makes sense, though maybe showing them the big twist wasn't the best way to do that.
But apparently the trailers were completely out of Taylor's hands, although he was given a heads up about what they were doing and he had some unpleasant conversations with the studio.
Terminator Genisys, which hopes to revive the franchise for a new trilogy, hits theaters on July 1. It stars Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke, Jai Courtney and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
