Warning to fashionistas everywhere: Beware of what you do in your skinny jeans because some every day activities done while wearing them can be hazardous to your health.
The Associated Press reported that a woman in Australia was hospitalized for several days after she experienced numbness in her feet when she repeatedly squatted while helping a family member move.
The 35-year-old woman eventually fell to the ground and was unable to get up and walk. She was taken to a hospital for muscle damage, swelling and nerve blockages in her legs.
"We were surprised that this patient had such severe damage to her nerves and muscles," Dr. Thomas Kimber of the Royal Adelaide Hospital said in an email.
According to a case study written by her doctors and published Monday in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry, this is the first time a patient has been hospitalized and treated for damage to their legs caused by wearing tight-fitting jeans.
The case study also stated that her lower legs were “markedly oedematous bilaterally” and the only way to remove the jeans was by cutting them off.
After four days of receiving intravenous hydration, the woman recovered and was released from the hospital.
It’s not likely that she’ll be wearing skinny jeans much anymore but if she does she'll probably be mindful not to squat.
