Even though Marvel and Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man took a significant tumble in its second weekend, the film was still able to hold off a trio of new films at the box office. Adam Sandler’s Pixels, the John Green adaptation Paper Towns and Jake Gyllenhaal’s Southpaw couldn’t keep audiences from the new Marvel romp.
Ant-Man grossed $24.7 million in its second weekend, according to Rentrak data. That brings it up to $106 million domestically after 10 days. The film debuted to $58 million last week, so its second-weekend gross was a 57 percent drop.
The film is also doing really well internationally, although it came in second to Universal’s Minions in foreign markets. Ant-Man added $35.4 million from outside North America, bringing its international total to $120.4 million.
Back home, Sony’s Pixels gave Sandler another disappointing debut with just $24 million. The studio had tried to cool expectations so the final number wouldn’t be so bad to take, but it still doesn’t look good. The 3D movie cost $90 million and is the latest dud for Sandler. His last been studio comedy was Blended, which only made $46.3 million during its entire run.
Minions came in third with $22 million. It’s now up to $261.5 million domestically and has made $497.8 million internationally. Universal’s Trainwreck with Amy Schumer also hung around or $17.2 million. It’s up to $61.5 million after 10 days.
Southpaw, released by the Weinstein Company, debuted in fifth with $16.5 million. Fox’s Paper Towns didn’t quite capture the imagination like The Fault In Our Stars last year and only debuted to $12.5 million.
Inside Out made $7.3 million, while Jurassic World added $6.8 million
Mr. Holmes with Sir Ian McKellen grossed $2.8 million from 686 locations. Terminator Genisys rounded out the Top 10 with just $2.4 million.
