Ant-Man with Paul Rudd may have been Marvel’s 12th movie to open at No. 1, but the film didn’t exactly explode at the box office. Amy Schumer and Judd Apatow’s Trainwreck had a more impressive opening, despite coming in third.
Ant-Man grossed $58 million domestically, with an additional $56.4 million from overseas territories. Again, this was the studio’s 12th movie to debut at No. 1, but this was Marvel’s worst opening at home since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. That film, released by Universal before Marvel Studios was wholly owned by Disney, opened to $55.4 million.
Of course, Marvel should still be happy that Ant-Man did as well as it did. While it didn’t quite capture the imagination like Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man didn’t become the disaster it could have been, considering that the film was hit with bad press when director Edgar Wright left. The final product was directed by Yes Man’s Peyton Reed and stars Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly.
Universal’s Minions, which earned the second-best ever opening for an animated film with $115.2 million. This weekend, it fell by over 50 percent, grossing $50.2 million. It is already up to $216.7 million domestically and has made $409.1 million outside of North America.
Trainwreck, which was also released by Universal, debuted to $30.2 million and certainly cashed in on the popularity of Schumer. It’s also a rebound for Apatow, since his previous film, This Is 40, only opened to $11.5 million in December 2012.
Inside Out made another $11.6 million, bringing its domestic total to $306.3 million. Jurassic World rounded out the Top 5 with $11.3 million.
By the way, if anyone’s counting, World is now up to $1.5 billion worldwide. And while the film has been a disappointment at home, Terminator Genisys has made $196.8 million overseas.
