After six movies, Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky franchise has become more of a punchline than something to take seriously. But Creed might change all that, especially based on the first trailer.
When news of the project first surfaced two years ago, it was met with some scepticism and sounded like a surprising follow-up feature for Ryan Coogler, the director of the acclaimed Fruitvale Station. But it turns out that making a film about Apollo Creed’s son was a passion project for him and Sylvester Stallone liked the idea.
Michael B. Jordan, the star of Fruitvale, plays Apollo’s son and is pursuing a boxing career himself. He gets Rocky (Stallone) to train him, turning the tables on the franchise’s format. Now Rocky is the old trainer, helping his old rival’s son reach his dreams.
Creed hits theaters on Nov. 25.
