Authorities have said that four Marines were killed during attacks at two separate military facilities in Chatanooga, Tennessee on Thursday.
FoxNews.com reported that officials are treating the case as a possible terrorism act.
“We are treating this as an act of terrorism,” said Bill Killian, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee.
However, FBI agent Ed Reinhold told reporters that it has not been determined “whether it was terrorism -- whether it was domestic, international -- or whether it was a simple, criminal act."
The Times Free Press noted that the first attack occurred at 10:45 a.m. when a man in a vehicle began firing shots at the Army Recruiting Center on Lee highway. The suspect then led police on a chase to the Naval and Marine Reserve Center at the Chattanooga Riverpark and fired more shots.
Four Marines were killed in the gunfire and law enforcement sources have said that the gunman, who has been identified as Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, is also dead.
Tennessee House Majority Leader Gerald McCormick expressed his sadness upon hearing of the morning’s events.
