After the success of Marvel's Avengers movies, it seems like every studio is trying to start their own shared film universe, and now Fox will be doing that with Fantastic Four and X-Men.

According to Yahoo Movies, Bryan Singer has confirmed that a Fantastic Four/X-Men crossover is being discussed.

“Those ideas are in play,” he said. “That would be a natural match-up because they’re both ensemble films and there is a natural mechanism by which to do it.”

He wouldn't expand on what he means by "a natural mechanism" except to say that it will somehow involve time. Could this be another time travel story like in Days of Future Past?

X-Men and Fantastic Four don't really seem like an obvious pairing, but at the moment they're Fox's only major comic book movies. The studio has exclusive rights to this universe of characters over Marvel Studios, and so naturally they're trying to pair the two together.

For now, Bryan Singer is hard at work at X-Men: Apocalypse, the third in the series of X-Men prequel films. That movie will pair the X-Men against Apocalypse, an immortal mutant played by Oscar Isaac. It will star Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Evan Peters, Sophie Turner and Kodi Smit-McPhee. For more of the upcoming movie, take a look at the first official images.

X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 27, 2016.
