Comic Con, easily the largest pop culture event in the country - if not the world, is staying put in San Diego. The convention will stay put through at least 2018.

The news was first reported by Variety. Later, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer made it official in a press conference, reports NBC San Diego.

Some thought that the convention might move north to Los Angeles as the convention has exploded to average over 130,000 attendees. However, the convention has history with San Diego, since it began there in 1970, when it was just about comic books. Now, the event brings Hollywood studios, who promote their new films, and other media companies. The convention also brings in over $180 million to the city’s economy.

Faulconer has also tried to convince hotels not to jack up rates during the convention, since they usually skyrocket to take advantage of attendees who are only in the city for the four-day event.

The 2015 SDCC runs from Thursday, July 9 to Sunday, July 12. The convention is organized by the same company that also puts together Wondercon, which is moving to Los Angeles in 2016.
