To kick off its San Diego Comic Con announcements, DC Comics released more details on Frank Miller’s third Dark Knight book, which follows the events of his iconic 1986 series The Dark Knight Returns.

DC Comics announced that Miller’s role in the project will just be as co-writer with Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets). Andy Kubert and Klaus Janson will handle the art.

Titled The Dark Knight III: The Master Race, the book will be spread over eight issues with 32 pages. There will also be a special 16-page Dark Knight Universe story in the middle of each book, drawn by guest artists.

“We went into this knowing that we had to give fans more,” Dan DiDio and Jim Lee, Co-Publishers for DC Entertainment, said in a statement. “We’re pulling out all the stops to deliver an amazing conclusion to this exciting body of work. We hope it inspires the next generation of writers and artists, the way it has already inspired us.”

“Frank Miller and Brian Azzarello have crafted such an incredible story for DKIII, as I am truly honored to be associated with them, this project, and Klaus Janson,” Kubert added. “We, along with the fans, are in for a great ride!”

The Master Race will help DC mark the 30th anniversary of TDKR and will start in late fall 2015.

Miller’s original 1986 series helped revive interest in Batman and has been considered among the greatest graphic novels ever created. He did return to the universe he created for 2002's The Dark Knight Strikes Again, although that was met with much less enthusiasm than his original work. Hopefully pairing Miller up with a team to work with will help The Master Race turn out much better.
