Fast-food workers in New York got a bit of a victory on Thursday when it was recommended that they make $15 an hour over the next few years. However, not everyone is cheering about it, in fact Dunkin Donuts CEO Nigel Travis has called the increase “absolutely outrageous.”
Travis talked about his concerns over the hike to $15 an hour during an interview with CNN.
“It’s going to affect small businesses and franchises,” he said. “I don’t want to sound threatening about that.”
Travis did say that the company likely would not layoff current workers, but may not be able to hire new ones as a result of the increase.
The CEO also said that he supports “reasonable” wage increases and had his own hourly wage number in mind, stating that he believes the workers should make closer to $12 an hour.
A previously reported, these comments come one day after New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's panel recommended that “minimum wage be raised for employees of fast-food chain restaurants throughout the state to $15 an hour."
New York’s current minimum wage is $8.75 per hour.
