Emma Thompson, who has been acting in Hollywood for over three decades, certainly knows how the system works and the sexism that is hard to work against. Thompson, 56, said that sexism in the Hollywood system is even worse than it was when she was just starting out.
“I think it’s still completely s*** actually,” Thompson told the U.K. magazine Radio Times. “I don’t think there’s any appreciable improvement and I think that for women, the question of how they are supposed to look is worse than it was even when I was young. So, no, I am not impressed at all.”
Thompson’s interview comes after she finished her latest film, The Legend of Barney Thompson, in which she plays a 77-year-old prostitute. While getting a 77-year-old actress for the part would have have been cool, she admits that it was a “wildly comic role and I couldn’t resist.”
The two-time Oscar winner - who won for her performance in Howards End and writing the adapted screenplay for Sense and Sensibility - explained that she supports young female performers because conditions have gotten worse, in her opinion.
“When I was younger, I really did think we were on our way to a better world and when I look at it now, it is in a worse state than I have known it, particularly for women and I find that very disturbing and sad,” she told the Radio Times.
The Saving Mr. Banks star is just the latest actress to speak up about sexism in the system. Cara Delevingne, Zoe Saldana, Rose Byrne, Kristen Stewart have all blasted Hollywood for sexism.
