Johnny Depp is joining forces with Sir Richard Branson to produce a TV series based on Muscle Shoals, the acclaimed documentary about the famed Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama.

The series will be produced by Depp and Christi Dembrowski’s Infinitum Nihil company with Branson and Joshua D. Maurer and Alexandre Witlin’s City Entertainment. Greg Camalier, the director of the documentary, will act as producer on the series. Virgin Produced Executive Vice President of Production Rene Rigal, who brought the idea to the studio, will oversee with Bobby DeLeon of Infinitum Nihil.

Muscle Shoals will look at one of the American South’s most iconic music landmarks and the musical melting pot it created. The series will take viewers behind-the-scenes of the music recorded there and what helped create the Muscle Shoals Sound.

“Greg’s film unearthed the poetic mysticism and inspired us to produce a series that utilizes music and narrative in a unique and ground-breaking way,” Jason Felts, CEO of Virgin Produced, said in a statement. “This provocative story about the rich region and pioneering artists that birthed the iconic ‘Muscle Shoals Sound’ fits in with Virgin’s music roots and provides an ideal opportunity to partner with Depp, Infinitum and City Entertainment.”

Muscle Shoals was released by Magnolia Pictures in 2013 and earned a Grammy nomination. It premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.
