While Kid Rock might not be happy with anyone who protests the confederate battle flag, the Detroit rocker hasn’t actually used the image himself in years, a publicist said on Thursday.
In a statement to the Detroit Free Press, publicist Nick Stern insisted that the “Born Free” singer hasn’t used the flag during a concert in five years. “They’re protesting something he’s not even doing,” Stern added.
The comments come after protesters started calling out Kid Rock for using the controversial flag. Al Sharpton’s organization even had a protest outside his Detroit Historical Museum exhibit.
In response, Kid Rock, whose real name is Robert James Ritchie, sent a statement to Fox News, which told the protesters to “kiss my ass.” But despite those comments, Stern said that Kid Rock stopped using the flag even before he received an honor from the Detroit chapter of the NAACP in 2011.
Kid Rock is currently touring with Chevrolet as a sponsor. Protesters have even called on Chevrolet to stop using his song “Born Free” in commercials, but the automaker said it will still sponsor his tour.
