Macy’s announced Wednesday morning that it will no longer carry Donald Trump merchandise at its stores after Trump’s controversial remarks on Mexican immigrants in June.
The store came under the same pressure that NBC and Univision faced after Trump called Mexican immigrants “rapists” and accused them of “bringing drugs” during his announcement that he is running for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, he actually doubled down on those remarks.
“I like Mexico. I love the Mexican people. I do business with the Mexican people, but you have people coming through the border that are from all over. And they're bad. They're really bad,” Trump said. "You have people coming in, and I'm not just saying Mexicans, I'm talking about people that are from all over that are killers and rapists and they're coming into this country.”
In response to these comments and a Moveon.org petition asking them to drop him, Macy’s told CNN that it will no longer work with Trump.
“We are disappointed and distressed by recent remarks about immigrants from Mexico. We do not believe the disparaging characterizations portray an accurate picture of the many Mexicans, Mexican Americans and Latinos who have made so many valuable contributions to the success of our nation,” the retailer said in a statement. “In light of statements made by Donald Trump, which are inconsistent with Macy's values, we have decided to discontinue our business relationship with Mr. Trump and will phase-out the Trump menswear collection, which has been sold at Macy's since 2004.”
Both NBC and Univision said that they will not broadcast the July 12 Miss USA pageant. Trump has already filed a $500 million lawsuit against Univision for breach of contract.
