Although the dangers of fireworks are well documented some people still attempt dangerous stunts when celebrating and the results are often catastrophic.
WGME reported that unfortunately that was the case for Devon Staples of Calais, Maine. The 22-year-old was celebrating Independence Day on Saturday evening by setting off fireworks with some friends when he attempted to launch a mortar tube off of his head.
Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety, said that the incident caused a head injury and Staples was killed instantly.
Fire officials said in addition to his death, there were also a number of firework-related injuries in the state. Most of the injuries were burns and to the eyes. More than 1,000 people seek treatment every year for injuries sustained by fireworks and about half of those occur at private parties and gatherings.
The Associated Press noted that Staples’ fatality is the first in the state since fireworks were legalized there in 2012.
