It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia co-creator and star Rob McElhenney has been hired to direct Warner Bros.’ Minecraft movie. The project will be his feature directing debut.

Mohjang, the Swedish developer behind the beloved game, announced the news earlier today. They posted a picture of the actor at MINECON in London earlier this month.

Warner Bros. has has the film rights to Minecraft since February 2014. The LEGO Movie producer Roy Lee was assigned to oversee the project for the studio and Jill Messick is co-producing.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, writers Kiernan Mulroney and Michele Mulroney wrote the initial script. Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, Real Steel) was first hired to direct, but he left the project.

McElhenney’s directing experience only includes three episodes of It’s Always Sunny and a test reel for a family adventure movie called Figment, which was bought by Legendary.

It’s not clear when Warner Bros. wants to get Minecraft finally on the big screen. The game is very open-ended, allowing users to construct their own worlds.
