Mom Made Munchies and Meals is a quick and easy, organic way to feed kids without the hassle of cooking. But do the kids like them?

To test them out, I picked out two of my girls’ favorite foods - pizza and meatballs. Using the microwave heating instructions, I started with the Cheese Pizza Munchie. Quick and easy. But when I cut them in half for a faster cooling time, I was surprised to see - or not see actually - cheese or sauce. Instead the insides looked like another clump of dough. But pizza is pizza, so that did not stop them from trying. The critique was surprising.

My 8-year-old asked if there was potato in them. I was intrigued by the question - potato and pizza? The child has some fine taste buds, because in addition to the tomato and cheese there is butternut squash, potato and cauliflower mixed in.

They were both not thrilled with the overall lack of “pizza” flavor, but highly complimented the outer crust, calling it flaky and moist. (they may watch a bit too much Food Network and MasterChef!)

Next up were the Italian Style Beef Meatballs, made with antibiotic-free beef. These took longer than the instructions suggested to heat. One minute was actually 2 ½ minutes.

They were moist, not rubbery, which can happen in the microwave. The girls were bummed that there was no sauce packet in the box, but grabbed the toothpicks for appetizer fun.

I have to say they make meatballs regularly from their great-grandmother’s recipe, so I was not expecting excitement. My 8-year-old had one, made a gruesome face and didn’t go back for more. My 10-year-old, who is less fussy, did have a few more than that, but left quite a few on the plate. The meatballs were not a hit.

Overall, they got a kick out of trying foods with hidden veggies, but I don’t see them going back for more.

The other concern is the calorie, fat and sodium content on these snack sized items. One pizza munchie is 200 calories, has 10 grams of fat and 240 mg of sodium. The meatballs, for 10 of them, there are 170 calories, 10 grams of fat and 170 mg of sodium.

Overall, for the quality and price, I’d stick with the chicken nuggets for a quick easy meal. I know my girls would too.
