Netflix is going into the film world head first, starting off with what it clearly hopes will be an awards player this year. The streaming service is hoping to have two films released before the end of the year and two more in the first quarter of 2016.
The slate starts off with Beasts Of No Nation, which stars Idris Elba and was directed by Cary Fukunaga (True Detective Season 1, Jane Eyre). Deadline, which first reported on the release dates, notes that the film will hit theaters on Oct. 16 with a limited release through Bleecker Street. The theatrical release will mean the film can be considered for the Oscars.
Beasts of No Nation is based on a novel by Uzodinma Iweala and is about a child soldier (Abraham Attah) who is mentored by a war lord (Elba) during a civil war.
Up next for Netflix will be Adam Sandler’s The Ridiculous Six, which caused some controversy earlier this year. That film, which is the first of four movies he will make for Netflix, will be released on Dec. 11.
Netflix didn’t set an exact date for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend, but it will be out in the first quarter of 2016. It was directed by martial arts choreographer Yuen Wo-Ping and will only be released to theaters in IMAX. It will also be released to theaters in China.
Lastly, Pee-wee’s Big Holiday will be released in March 2016. The film stars Paul Reubens as the title character again and Judd Apatow helped produce.
Netflix didn’t set a release date for its most anticipated movie project, War Machine with Brad Pitt.
