Sad news came out of a zoo in Czech Republic on Tuesday that one of the last northern white rhinos left in the world has passed away.
CNN noted that authorities at the Dvůr Králové Zoo said the rhino died of a ruptured cyst.
The death of the 31-year-old female rhino named Nabiré, now only leaves three other females and one male left on the planet.
"It is a terrible loss. Nabiré was the kindest rhino ever bred in our zoo. It is not just that we were very fond of her. Her death is a symbol of the catastrophic decline of rhinos due to senseless human greed," the zoo's director Premysl Rabas said in a statement.
Sudan, Najin, Fatu and Nola are the four remaining northern white rhinos all except for Nola live in Kenya. Nola’s home is at the San Diego Zoo. As previously reported, two male rhinos at the Southern California zoo died last year.
The 42-year-old Sudan is now the only male northern white rhino on earth but may not be able to mount a mate anymore because of his age. Nola and Najin are past the reproductive age and Futa cannot breed naturally due to a uterine condition.
