A remake of the 1922 silent masterpiece Nosferatu is in the works, even though the F.W. Murnau’s film remains one of the most well known horror films ever made.

The news was first reported by Deadline this week. Jeff Robinov’s Studio 8 is behind the plans, with Robert Eggers writing and directing. Eggers is also set to write and direct The Knight for Studio 8.

The Nosferatu remake will be produced by Jay Van Hoy and Lars Knudsen’s Parts and Labor. The duo were also behind Eggers’ breakthrough Sundance horror film The Witch, as well as recent indie hits Beginners and Ain’t Them Bodies Saints.

Nosferatu was made in 1922 by Murnau as a Dracula adaptation, although he had to change the names of all the characters because he couldn’t get the rights to the Bram Stoker novel. In 1979, Werner Herzog made a remake called Nosferatu the Vampyre. In 2000, Universal made an Oscar-nominated film about the making of Nosferatu, titled Shadow of the Vampire.
