The son of prison escapee Richard Matt, has decided to claim his father’s body and said that he believes police wrongfully killed him.

WPTZ noted that Matt’s son, Nicholas Harris, who originally did not respond to authorities about claiming his father’s body, now says he will claim it.

After Megan Avery, a spokeswoman for Alice Hyde Medical Center, said Wednesday that the family would not be claiming the body and the escapee would be buried by the county corner, Harris changed his mind. He said that he is planning a private burial for his father.

According to WIVB, Harris also said that he felt authorities wrongfully killed Matt and believed that shooting him in the head multiple times was excessive.

As previously reported, Matt and David Sweat escaped the Clinton County Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York on June 6.

Matt was fatally shot last Friday. Officials said he had a confrontation with a border patrol officer and he was then shot.

Sweat was apprehended on Sunday and has been interviewed by police several times since.
