A beach in Rhode Island had to be evacuated on Saturday morning after a woman was injured by an apparent explosion.

ABC News noted that Rayna Maguire of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said that Salty Brine State Beach in Narragansett was evacuated around 11 a.m. after what witnesses described as an explosion.

Maguire also said that a 50-year-old woman was injured by the explosion and thrown onto rocks. She was then transported to a local hospital.

According to several beachgoers they heard a “loud boom” which sounded like a “gas explosion” or a “grenade.”

The Providence Journal reported that the Bomb Squad was called in and Sgt. Thomas Silvia said authorities were combing the area for a suspect believed to have dropped a device in the sand.

Law enforcement officials are asking anyone who saw something to contact them immediately.

Salty Brine State Beach, formally known as Galilee State Beach, is located on Narragansett’s Block Island Sound.
