Frozen tuna has been recalled after dozens of people in 11 states fell ill with a strain of salmonella.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention initially announced the outbreak in May and the recalls were announced this week. At least 62 people in 11 states were sickened and about a dozen have been hospitalized, however, no deaths were reported.
Residents in Washington, California, Arizona, New Mexico, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Virginia and Mississippi all had cases of the illness, California had the most with 34. Some of the victims consumed food that was made using frozen raw tuna meat before showing symptoms of diarrhea, fever, vomiting and abdominal cramps.
"Most ill people in the outbreak reported eating sushi made with raw tuna in the week before becoming sick," a release from the CDC noted.
The tuna meat was produced by the company Osamu Corporation and was sold to restaurants and grocery stores throughout the U.S. between May 9 and July 9.
In a release posted on the Food and Drug Administration’s website, Osamu Corp. said that it believes the meat is no longer available for purchase.
