Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, who apparently have more time in a day than anyone else in the world, have signed on to direct a Star Wars Anthology movie, Lucasfilm and Disney announced today.
The film will tell the story of a young Han Solo before he met Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi during the events of Star Wars: A New Hope. It will be written by Lawrence Kasdan and his son, Jon Kasdan.
Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and the upcoming The Force Awakens, will executive produce. Jason McGatlin and Will Allegra will co-produce. The film is slated for release on May 25, 2018.
Miller and Lord are best known for directing Warner Bros.’ The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. They were also hired to make a Spider-Man animated film in April for Sony. Considering all the other projects they have to do, they will only be producers on 23 Jump Street, the LEGO Movie 2 and the other LEGO movies. And in April, it was also rumored that they were hired by Warner Bros. to write a draft of The Flash.
On the TV side, they are working on a Greatest American Hero reboot and are executive producers on Will Forte’s Last Man On Earth.
“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us,” Miller and Lord said in a statement. “This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy added, “It’s not just any filmmaker who can tell the story of such a beloved icon like Han Solo, and I’m excited to say we’ve found the perfect team to handle the task. Larry and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han’s story.”
Thankfully for Miller and Lord, the Han Solo movie isn’t slated for release until May 28, 2018. That will make it the third Anthology movie, following 2016’s Rogue One and the film Simon Kinberg is producing.
