After 34 years of uncertainty, we finally know the truth behind the 80’s hit “Jessie’s Girl.”

Rick Springfield, the “Jessie’s Girl” singer, was on Jimmy Kimmel last night to promote his film Ricki and the Flash. Before his appearance, Springfield shared a special video with Kimmel. “Footage of the first time Rick and his band ever played it [the song],” Kimmel explained.

The film starts with Springfield instructing his band mates. “Scoob you come in with the base line I told you…” he says. We are then introduced to the drummer, Jessie, and his girlfriend, Monica. “Jessie just high-hat, fours, and then high-hat. Monica, you just enjoy,” the singer instructs.

The band plays while Springfield recites the lyrics we all know and love. “Jessie is a friend, yeah I know he’s been a good friend of mine,” sings Springfield as Jessie and Monica smile in the background. Things turn awkward when Springfield gets to the lyrics “Jessie’s got himself a girl and I want to make her mine.”

Springfield is in Meryl Streep’s upcoming film Ricki and the Flash. He also played a part in the second season of HBO’s True Detective.

Kimmel has had a busy week. On Monday he went wedding dress shopping with former Bachelorette, Kaitlyn Bristowe. Tuesday, Kimmel got emotional about the death of Cecil the Lion. Last night, aside from sharing the exclusive “Jessie’s Girl” footage, Kimmel had Tyler, The Creator on his show to rap to the new Dr. Seuss book.
