The Toronto Blue Jays have won the David Price war as they acquired the left-handed pitcher in a trade with the Detroit Tigers on Thursday.
According to Fox Sports, the Tigers will get left-handers Daniel Norris, Jairo Labourt, and Matt Boyd in exchange for Price. The Blue Jays will pay the rest of Price’s salary. Price had been the subject of many trade rumors and had drawn interest from a lot of teams. The New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros, and the San Francisco Giants were among the teams interested in Price.
This is the second big deal of the week for the Blue Jays. As previously reported, the Blue Jays acquired shortstop Troy Tulowitzki from the Colorado Rockies.
Price was acquired by the Tigers from the Tampa Bay Rays before last year’s trade deadline. He is a five-time All-Star and won the AL CY Young award in 2012. This season he is 9-4 with a 2.53 ERA, according to ESPN. Price will be a free agent after this season.
Norris was 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in five starts for the Blue Jays this season. He was 3-10 with a 4.27 ERA with Triple-A Buffalo. Labourt was 2-7 with a 4.59 ERA with Single-A Dunedin. Boyd was 0-2 with a 14.85 ERA with the Blue Jays, and 9-2 with a 1.68 ERA in Double-A and Triple-A.
Price is the third ace pitcher to be traded recently, joining Cole Hamels (Philadelphia Phillies to Texas Rangers) and Johnny Cueto (Cincinnati Reds to Kansas City Royals). The Blue Jays are 51-51 and are seven games behind the Yankees in the AL East and two games back in the AL Wild card race. The Tigers are 49-52 and are fourth in the AL Central.
