Life is a struggle for the characters in many of this week’s new films. The loss of a child, psychological experimentation and relationship troubles are some of the issues they’re wrestling with. In addition to all of that drama, a romantic comedy and a small super hero with big strength also enter the box office race.

A thief becomes a superhero in Ant-Man. Equipped with a special suit that shrinks him, Scott Lang takes on his biggest robbery yet, as the safety of the world hangs in the balance. The PG-13 action adventure stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Michael Pena, Evangeline Lilly, T.I., Judy Greer and Bobby Cannavale. The one hour and fifty-seven minute family film is playing in conventional, 3D and IMAX theaters.

A writer, who doesn’t believe in monogamy, starts to question her beliefs in Trainwreck. Her work and personal life intertwine as she starts to have feelings for a sports doctor she is interviewing for an article. Amy Schumer, Bill Hader, Brie Larson, Colin Quinn, Tilda Swinton, John Cena, LeBron James and Method Man star in the two hour and five minute comedy. Judd Apatow directed and co-wrote the film with Amy Schumer. It’s rated R for sex, nudity, language and drugs.

A lonely and old Sherlock Holmes reminisces about his life and work in Mr. Holmes. He reopens the unsolved case that caused him to retire with the hopes of getting the answers before his mental state diminishes. The PG film stars Ian McKellen and Laura Linney. The limited released drama plays for one hour and forty-four minutes.

A down on his luck college philosophy professor struggles with where he’s at in life in Irrational Man. As he deals with his own issues, he has two women, a fellow teacher and his star student, vying for his affection. The Woody Allen film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone and Parker Posey. The comedic drama is playing in limited theaters for one hour and thirty-four minutes. It’s rated R for language and sex.

A grieving mother struggles with not knowing who is responsible for her son’s death in Lila and Eve. Feeling as though the police are not doing a good enough job finding the murderer, a woman from her support group convinces her to seek answers for herself. Seeking retribution, the two venture out to find his killer. Jennifer Lopez and Viola Davis star in the limited released drama. The one hour and thirty-four minute drama is rated R for violence and language.

The late Robin Williams plays a man, unhappy with his life in the limited released drama, Boulevard. A chance meeting with a disturbed young man is the spark that ignites his desire to live for himself. The drama is running in limited theaters for one hour and twenty-eight minutes. It’s rated R for language and sex.

Prison experiment volunteers get more than what they bargained for in The Stanford Experiment. The psychological test studies the relationships and mental states of prisoners and guards in a simulated jail situation. The dramatic thriller is running in limited theaters for two hours and two minutes. It’s rated R for language and sex.

Comedienne Amy Schumer is taking a shot at bringing her comedy to the big screen this weekend. Next week, comedian and movie vet Adam Sandler releases his latest, Pixels. Jake Gyllenhaal’s Southpaw and Paper Towns also join the box office race on July 24.
