Thrillers, horror films and dramas make up many of this week’s new releases. While most are adult themed, there is one film out this week that is sure to get the kids begging to go to the movie theater, the Despicable Me prequel.
Find out what the Despicable Me Minions were up to before they met Gru in Minions. The PG-animated adventure follows them as they search for a master. The one hour and thirty-one minute comedy features the voices of Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Steve Coogan and Allison Janney.

A dying, rich man is enticed by the idea of immortality in Self/less. Suffering from cancer, he decides to try to prolong his life by undergoing surgery to put his mind in a younger, healthy man’s body. As he goes about his renewed life, he begins to learn more about the man behind his new vessel. The PG-13 film stars Ryan Reynolds and Sir Ben Kingsley. The sci-fi thriller runs for one hour and fifty-seven minutes.

A high school theater is haunted by a former student in The Gallows. When the school’s theater group decides to perform a play that a student died in years ago, they stir up evil spirits. The horror film runs for one hour and twenty minutes. It’s rated R for violence and terror.

A couple frantically searches for their missing daughters, lost in a desert storm in Strangerland. The loss of their children puts a strain on their relationship. The limited released drama stars Nicole Kidman and Joseph Fiennes. The one hour and fifty-one minute film is rated R for language, sex and nudity.

Family secrets are revealed in What We Did on Our Holiday. While on a family vacation, the children share embarrassing details about their parents with their relatives. The PG-13 film stars Rosamund Pike, David Tennant and Billy Connolly. The comedic drama is playing in limited theaters for one hour and thirty-five minutes.

Get an intimate look at late singer Amy Winehouse with the documentary, Amy. The two hour and eight minute film shows her rise and fall from fame. It features never before seen footage of the British star as well as some of her unreleased music tracks. The limited released film is rated R for language and drugs.

This week, families had the opportunity to share a laugh with Minions but next week’s comedy Trainwreck is geared toward adults. Ant Man and Mr. Holmes are also joining in on the box office race on July 17.
