The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center outside of Washington D.C. was placed on lockdown Monday after law enforcement received unconfirmed reports of a gunshot fired at the campus.
The Montgomery County Police Department said a call came in around 10:45 a.m. about a single gunshot fired. The Associated Press noted that the department’s spokeswoman Natasha Plotnikov said that the shot was reported to have occurred inside building 1. However, the department has yet to confirm or deny if a shot was fired.
The U.S. Navy tweeted that it also cannot confirm any incident at this time but a shelter for hospital personnel was put in place while authorities continue investigate.
Federal agents were dispatched to the scene to assist local police.
This unconfirmed report comes on the heels of another report last week at the Washington Navy Yard. Reports of an active shooter at that location turned out to be unfounded.
More than 8,500 employees work out of the medical center which treats more than 1 million patients a year.
