The only major downside of Spider-Man being sold to Marvel is that Andrew Garfield got completely screwed, but there were some rumors at the time that he was in talks to return. Was any of that true?
According to Garfield himself, no, he was never in talks to return after Marvel purchased the rights to Spider-Man back from Sony. It sounds like he's made peace with that, though, and in fact he added that he was always hoping the character would go back to Marvel.
"I’ve been petitioning to hook up with Marvel since the beginning, so I’m really glad they’re finally doing it," Garfield said.
Garfield added that he's excited to watch a Marvel Spider-Man film and to watch it as a fan this time. When asked to elaborate on what Amazing Spider-Man 3 might have looked like, Garfield said that he and writer Alex Kurtzman were already workshopping some ideas.
"We thought to kind of start from the base level, the foundational level of where have we left Peter and where do we want to see him go and what’s logical," he said. "And how do we build upon where we left off with this deep, desperate moment with Gwen? So, yeah, we got to some pretty heavy places and I was really excited to kind of explore it and be involved on the ground level like that. But, anyway, it wasn’t meant to be. As I say, I’m just really excited that I get to watch."
It's kind of a bummer that Garfield was booted off of Spider-Man so soon, but the actor has been very positive about what Marvel is doing with the character. He recently endorsed Tom Holland as Spider-Man, calling him a wonderful young actor.
Holland's Spider-Man will debut in Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016.
