Ice Cube and his son, O’Shea Jackson Jr., who played his famous father in Straight Outta Compton, might have found another project to work together on. There were conflicting reports out of Hollywood last night that the two might be starring together in a film about the 1992 Los Angeles riots.
First, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the two were in talks to star in April 29, 1992, a Lionsgate project that Cube’s Ride Along director, Will Packer, is producing. Packer and Cube were both executive producers on Straight Outta Compton.
Donovan Marsh (iNumber Number) is set to direct and the script is by Sascha Penn. The film will center on a former criminal hoping to save his son from joining a group of thugs who want to steal platinum from where he works. Shooting could start in February.
But then, a rep for Jackson and Cube told Deadline that they have “no plans” to make such a film. Another source told the site that there is “no truth to it at all.” While they were approached about the film months ago, talks stalled and did not move forward.
Straight Outta Compton hit $80 million as of Wednesday, according to Box Office Mojo stats. It has yet to open wide overseas and Cube is already in Europe to promote the N.W.A. movie. It has a shot to win the box office again this weekend.
