A U.S. army skydiver died over the weekend from injuries he suffered in the Chicago Air and Water Show.
The Associated Press reported that Sgt. 1st Class Corey Hood succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead around 4 p.m. on Sunday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
"Our focus right now is on supporting Corey’s family and grieving for our teammate," USAPT commander Lt. Col. Matthew Weinrich said in a statement. "As soldiers, there are risks every day in what we do, but you do everything you can to minimize those risks and it is extremely hard when that is not enough. The Knights are a very close knit team and the military skydiving community is equally close; we will support Corey’s family and each other during this difficult time."
The 32-year-old Hood was a native of Cincinnati and served five tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Witnesses said that Hood and another airman were injured when they clipped a high-rise apartment building before falling to the ground.
The accident remains under investigation.
