For a while, it looked as if Bill Murray would steer clear of the upcoming Ghostbusters project. Sources now say, however, he has a role in the female-led reboot.
Variety reported on August 9 that Murray confirmed his involvement. Beyond being attached, Murray hasn’t yet described his role, whether he’s reprising his part as Dr. Peter Venkman or simply making a cameo.
The actor initially seemed uncertain about the project. He previously told David Letterman a third Ghostbusters wouldn’t be a good idea, as 1989’s Ghostbusters II wasn’t as critically successful. Reprising his role, he said, would be “crazy talk.”
According to Deadline.com, Murray already arrived in Boston in secret to film his scene.
Filming began in June, with Boston creating the backdrop for New York.
The reboot, starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon and Chris Hemsworth, allegedly starts with Wiig’s and McCarthy’s characters writing a book about how ghosts aren’t a myth. The publication later costs Wiig’s character her university job, and she and McCarthy’s character go to form a new Ghostbusters organization.
Right now, Murray’s the second actor from the 1984 original to be involved. Reports from July state that Dan Aykroyd already did a scene.
