Bill Murray surprised many people when he agreed to a cameo in Ghostbusters 3 and he’s now sharing what got him to ultimately agree to do it.

His cameo was confirmed earlier this month although he’s been open about his disinterest in ever returning to the franchise following the film’s 1989 sequel. His failure to sign on for a third sequel led the franchise to get shelved for a while, until Paul Fieg came on for the female-driven reboot.

Murray told Vulture of his decision that “the girls” – as in Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig – were “tough to say no to.”

“You know, they were incredibly nice to ask me, and I really enjoyed being there,” Murray said. “They have such a jolly group, and they are going to have great success with this project. I didn’t want to overshadow [them] or anything, and I feel really good about it.”

He went on to talk about how long he’s put into thinking about this decision, saying, “I thought about it for a very long time.”

“Like, many, many months,” he continued. “No, that’s not right. I was seriously thinking about this for years, really … It kept eating at me, and I really respect those girls. And then I started to feel like if I didn’t do this movie, maybe somebody would write a bad review or something, thinking there was some sort of disapproval [on my part].”

Murray won’t be the only member of the original cast who has a cameo in the film. Dan Aykroyd filmed a scene with Wiig, which he shared on Facebook but later deleted.
