Prosecutors said that the prison breakout case against David Sweat may go to trial.

NBC News noted that Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie said that even though Sweat is serving a life sentence for a murder conviction that will not affect whether or not he chooses to bring about the breakout case.

"He committed a crime in this county and I'm prosecuting him for that crime," Wylie said. "We'll go whatever way we have to."

Sweat, who escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility with fellow inmate Richard Matt last June, could face an additional seven-year sentence if convicted.

As previously reported, the two inmates planned an elaborate escape which came to an end three weeks after they broke out with Matt fatally shot and Sweat wounded when he was captured.

The 34-year-old Sweat was given the sentence of life behind bars without the possibility of parole after being found guilty of killing a law enforcement official in 2002.
