YA apocalyptic thrillers are dropping as speedily as the leaves these days.
It was only last night when MTV dropped the first teaser for The Shannara Chronicles, and now Chloe Grace Moretz enters the genre among her Hunger Games, Maze Runner and Divergent peers just mere hours later with The 5th Wave's first trailer.
The film, based on the first book in Rick Yancey's trilogy of novels, finds Moretz as Cassie, whose on the run to save her younger brother, and find Earth's survival, when increasingly deadly attacks from The Others finds most of humanity's population wiped out.
Directed by J. Blakeson (the undervalued The Disappearance of Alice Creed), The 5th Wave also stars Maika Monre (It Follows), Liev Schrieber, Maggie Siff, Nick Robinson, Alex Roe and Ron Livingston. Based on this teaser alone, nothing about this appears very original or inspiring, and the comparisons to the films mentioned above are not easy to ignore. The January 15 release isn't promising many favors either. But here's hoping the talent involved can make something decent, especially considering how fairly well regarded the source material appears to be.
