CNN anchor Chris Cuomo is being hailed as a hero after he helped save a man caught in a rip current in the Hamptons over the weekend.
The New York Post reported that while fishing off Sunset Beach, the journalist and brother of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, saw a man struggling in the water and immediately sprung into action. After throwing a life preserver towards the man, Cuomo jumped in the water to help him.
“It was fast-moving water, a lot of boaters were anchored and he went for a swim and he didn’t judge the current right and as he came by us, I said, ‘Hey, how are you doing? He didn’t look right.’ And he said, ‘I’m not doing well,’” Cuomo recalled. “I threw him the life preserver, it wasn’t enough. So I didn’t think, I went in and got him and it was hard for us to swim across, but we eventually did.”
Witness Frank Cilione said that when Cuomo reached the victim the man still couldn’t swim out of the current but the New Day host was able to drag him to the shore.
Cuomo said that he hopes the lesson learned is to always think before swimming in fast moving water.
