A Colorado jury sentenced convicted movie theater shooter James Holmes to life in prison on Friday.
As we previously reported, jurors made the decision earlier this week that Holmes was eligible for the death penalty; agreeing that there were more aggravating factors than mitigating factors in the case.
The New York Times noted that a woman, who identified herself as juror 17, said nine jurors voted that Holmes get the death penalty, but one wanted life and two others were undecided. That resulted in the decision not being unanimous and therefore the sentence being life in prison.
“There was nothing further to discuss at that point,” juror 17 said. “It only takes one.”
Last month, the same jury rejected Holmes’ insanity defense and found him guilty of first degree murder for the 2012 shooting at an Aurora movie theater during a screening of The Dark Knight Rises. Twelve people were killed when he opened fire and another 70 were injured.
