As surprising as it may seem, Dr. Dre's new album Compton released exclusively on iTunes today, is only his third solo release. It is his first since 1999's, 2001. He has decicated the bulk of his career to being an incredible producer, mentor, and most notably CEO of Aftermath Entertainment and Beats Electronics.

He is a known perfectionist, having infamously put off the Detox album for years before ultimately scrapping it despite the tremendous hype. He decided to return in perfect fashion: With a soundtrack inspired by the new N.W.A. biopic, Straight Outta Compton.

As we previously reported, he will donate all profits from the album to a an arts and entertainment facility for kids in Compton. This is clearly a passion project for the legendary artist.

One criticism of Dre was that his best days were behind him and he is to old. He answers the haters right away with the poignant, “I’m too old I forgot I got it all, but Andre young enough to still get involved."

The album is filled with highlight moments. On "Darkside/Gone" it is surprising to hear him shout-out his former friend turned enemy, Eazy-E. Dead since 1995, Dr. Dre decides to pay tribute to his old friend by sampling his voice on "Darkside", and "For the Love of Money."

Ice Cube's appearance on "Issues" is somewhat underwhelming. That's okay though, because Snoop Dogg makes up for it. His tracks, "One Shot One Kill" and "Satisfaction" are the best guest appearances on the album.

The album culminates with "Medicine Man" fittingly featuring Eminem in vintage form. Then Dre finishes the album alone with the best track, "Talking To My Diary," where he talks about his early days in hip hop.

Compton is an excellent album that tells the incredible story of Dr. Dre's career from end to beginning. Dr. Dre wanted to make sure his hip hop finale was great. He succeeded.
