New Regency and 20th Century Fox released the photo on Yahoo Movies. It shows Fassbender as Callum Lynch, a character who was not in the video game series. In fact, the movie’s entire plot is original and not based on any game storyline.

Callum Lynch finds out that he is a descendent of a secret society of assassins thanks to unlocked genetic memories that put him in the head of his ancestor, Aguilar, who fought in 15th Century Spain. This gives him the skills to fight his enemies in the 21st Century.

Fassbender has been working on this project for years. He was first attached in July 2012 and then the movie was supposed to come out on Memorial Day 2015. That never happened obviously and it is now scheduled for release on Dec. 21, 2016.

The film will start production in September and also stars Marion Cotillard, Michael Kenneth Williams and Ariane Labed. Cotillard and Fassbender’s Macbeth director, Justin Kurzel. is directing.

Assassin’s Creed is being produced by New Regency, Ubisoft, DMC Films and Kennedy/Marshall, with RatPac and Alpha Pictures co-financing. Fox is distributing.
