The 39th President of the United States delivered the news through a brief statement on The Carter Center Website.

“Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body. I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare. A more complete public statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week.”

The 90-year-old Carter had the surgery on Aug. 3 “to remove a small mass in his liver.”

The Associated Press noted that Carter Center spokeswoman Deanna Congileo said the surgery was "elective" and that Carter's "prognosis is excellent for a full recovery."
